Sydney FC defender Nikola Petkovic says the squad has to keep fighting, as the Sky Blues push for the final series continues against Perth Glory at Allianz Stadium on Saturday afternoon (kick off 5:30pm).
Petkovic, who signed for the Sky Blues in September, said the squad would continue to battle for Head Coach Frank Farina and that the squad must prove their togetherness on Saturday night as they look to achieve their ambition of finals football.
“I think the last game we were unlucky,” Petkovic said.
“We missed three very good chances but this is football and we just have to keep going and fight for every ball and fight for the team and Sydney FC.
“We play for our coach. I give my best for the coach and this is what we all must think. You need to be hungry every day and in training in the game and then you will get something.”
With finals football still a real possibility for the Sky Blues, Petkovic said the squad must only focus on this week and not think about any future possibilities.
“In the last 3 games everyone says we lose but ok we have next week, we will be better,” said Petkovic
“But we don-t have next week, we only have this week and we need to win this week. The players need to switch on and think about our job on the field.
“No one can play for us. Not the board, not the president, not Frank Farina, no one. We play, we are the eleven players on the pitch and we just need to focus.”
Pressure is inherent at a club as large as Sydney FC and Petkovic said it was not detrimental to his game as he called for the squad to react and prove their worth.
“It-s normal there is the pressure here at Sydney FC,” Petkovic said.
“For me it-s the biggest club here and of course we need to react to this. “It-s not easy, but if we are a team then on Saturday we will prove this.”
