Sydney FC marquee Alessandro Del Piero insists he has signed with the Sky Blues to win titles and to start a new career after flying in to a hero-s welcome at Sydney International Airport.
Huge crowds greeted the Italian football superstar who flew in with his family at 11:20am on Sunday morning.
“I can’t believe it, I’m very happy,” said the 37-year old. “I am here not for the end of my career but for the start of my new career.”
He also confirmed he was determined to lift the A-League Championship with Sydney FC: “I want to win some (titles). I play to win.”
Around 500 fans carrying flags and banners had gathered from 5:30am, several hours before the striker was due to land, just to get a view of him.
After signing autographs and shaking hands the Italian great stopped to speak with gathered media before leaving in a waiting car.
He travelled to a hotel where he will rest with his family before facing the media in a press conference on Monday lunchtime.
Sydney FC CEO Tony Pignata said: “The fans gave Alessandro a fantastic welcome. It was tremendous. I-m sure it-s something he-ll remember for a very long time.”
With Sydney FC playing a trial match against Brisbane in Mackay later on Sunday, Del Piero will meet his new teammates for the first time on Tuesday.
