Sydney FC goalkeeper Ivan Necevski says it feels great to prove the doubters wrong after the Sky Blues finished fifth on the Hyundai A-League ladder to qualify for the Finals Series.
“When people write you off, especially early on in the season and after the first five games they are saying Sydney is going to struggle to make the six; it-s good to prove them wrong and show them exactly what Sydney are capable of,” said the keeper.
The 3-2 win over Newcastle Jets has ensured entry into the final weeks of the season and also raised the possibility of a home semi-final against Melbourne Heart, should Sydney beat Wellington and the Heart overcome Perth next weekend.
“That would be brilliant,” said Necevski. “That-s a big goal for us playing in front of our home fans.
“They turned out in numbers last night, almost 15,000 which was brilliant.
“We-re going to Wellington to get the win and hopefully get that home semi-final and maybe 20 to 25,000 [fans] against Heart if results go our way.”
Sydney are unbeaten in four games and have won their last two matches in front of their own fans at the Allianz Stadium.
“Like I always say they-re like our 12th man out on the field,” continued Ivan. “They-re yelling and screaming the whole game which is always very positive for us.
“They turn up in numbers and cheer us on week in, week out, win, lose or draw, so it-s very positive to have the fan base we have here in Sydney.”
More supporters than ever before have watched A-League games this year with a record cumulative total attendance of 1,416,157 fans for the season. The total beats the previous highest total of 1,393,933 in season 6 (2010/2011) when there was 30 more matches played.
