Sydney FC will take no risks with the fitness of marquee players Alessandro Del Piero and Brett Emerton with duo set to miss the trip to Wellington ahead of a busy period for the club.
With two games in five days and the five hour flight across the Tasman, Sky Blues medical staff have advised the pair stay behind and prepare for the visit of Brisbane Roar on Boxing Day.
“It looks as though Alessandro and Brett will miss this one,” said Head Coach Frank Farina. “Nothing bad or long term but just with the travel and particularly with Brisbane four days later it was probably just not worth the risk.
“It-s a difficult period for all teams involved but we-re in reasonable nick at the moment and hopefully we-ll have everyone back and get some good results on this run.”
The Phoenix lost to the Central Coast Mariners at North Sydney Oval last night and are yet to win a game.
However Farina isn-t taking them lightly.
“It-s without doubt a banana skin, dangerous game, call it what you want it-s a difficult one. They are playing quite well and were dead unlucky against Central Coast. We-ve got to be at our best if we-re going to get something over there.”
