Last night, Sydney FC’s Cortnee Vine made her FIFA Women’s World Cup debut and it was the culmination of a journey that started back in 2015 with Brisbane Roar and now continues to reach new heights with Sydney FC and the Matildas.
The Liberty A-League star started for Australia last night against Ireland in front of 75,000 fans at Stadium Australia and in her words, it was a dream come true.
“That was pretty crazy.
“The crowd was unbelievable, you just don’t imagine it like that,” Vine said.
“It is a dream come true to play in my first World Cup and to kick it off with a win, that’s what we want.”
Vine played 75 minutes and mainly played on the left hand side, with occasional stints on her familiar right where she is deployed by Ante Juric.
Australia won the match 1-0 with a Steph Catley second half penalty the difference on the night during a cagey affair.
“It was very physical which is what we expected from Ireland.
“I had no stresses with the penalty, was never in doubt for me,” she said.
Next up for Tony Gustavsson’s side is a meeting with Nigeria in Brisbane with a win most likely to progress them to the Round of 16.
“Nigeria will be prep this week but for now we just enjoy the win,” Vine concluded.
