What They Said: Alex Wilkinson: “I thought we were on top for the whole game not just second half.

“I think they had one other shot in the first half and none in the second.

“At the same time they sat deep and made it hard to break down and we lacked a bit of quality in the final third to break them down and get a goal.

“Overall our performance was good but we’ve got to be better in that final third.”

Match Report: A dominant Sydney FC have been denied at Eden Park after a solitary Oskar Zawada header gave Wellington Phoenix a 1-0 win in Auckland.

Sydney FC controlled the game from start to finish with 71% of the game played in the Phoenix half and 30 more penalty box entries than their opponents (48-18).

Steve Corica’s men could have gone in front when Robert Mak hit the post in the opening 15 minutes.

Zawada headed home the only goal of the game in the 20th minute.

The biggest talking point in the game came in the 63rd minute when Robert Mak was up-ended in the box by Tim Payne and neither the referee or VAR deemed it to be a penalty, despite the defender failing to touch the ball and making contact with the Slovakian.

Caceres and substitute Jaiden Kucharski had chances late on but the Phoenix sat deep and held onto their lead.
