As a second choice keeper, when matches roll around, you need to make the most of them.
And for Harrison Devenish-Meares he certainly did that last week when he started in between the posts against Eastern SC, making a very strong early save and going on to look solid in a 4-1 victory.
Tipped for the starting spot against Kaya tomorrow night, he is ready for his chance at the jersey.
“In a competitive goalkeeping squad, every minute I get is important and every match that I play in is like a World Cup final for me.
“I am really excited to just get out and play and I want the performance to be as it should,” Devenish-Meares said.
This season he has been behind Andrew Redmayne who has made 235 appearances for Sydney FC across his seven year spell with the club and despite only making two starts so far, both in the AFC Champions League Two, Harrison believes in the goalkeepers union.
“Redders [Redmayne] has been awesome for me and I just learned so much off him.
“He’s got a lot of experience and played at the highest level in Australia and for the National Team so I’m grateful I’ve got to work with him and I’m excited to learn more moving forward.”
Earlier in the press conference, Talay revealed that he is likely to rotate the squad with Devenish-Meares potentially being one of the oldest on the pitch.
Despite this, the shot-stopper is going to enjoy being a leader out there.
“It’s a great opportunity to use my voice and to develop my leadership skills.
“I need to ensure I am doing my job but I also need to help the younger boys execute their jobs as well and I’m excited about that,” the number 12 said.
“Every opportunity that you get to perform under any circumstances is important.
“It’s even more important to sort of play even when things are stacked up against you. Maybe you haven’t had a game in a few months, maybe you’ve travelled a long way, it’s all adding tools to that toolbox to make you a better player.
“I have the confidence that I can perform exactly how I want to perform and I look at it as like when I come on and cross that line, all external stuff is irrelevant.”
