Italian superstar Alessandro Del Piero says he welcomes the pressure that goes with being the biggest signing in Australian football history, and says he want to “wake up” the “soccer blood” in this country.

The World Cup winner was assured and charming as he fronted his first media conference in Australia, answering questions in both English and Italian.

“I know there’s a lot of expectation, and I love that,” Del Piero said.

“I played 19 years with Juventus – and in Juventus you have to win every game, every year.

“Fortunately a lot of the time that happened – but all my life I play for winning.

“I’m here for winning … I’m here because I trust in the win.”

Del Piero says he is happy to be the new face of the A-League, but that he is very much focused on performing on the pitch for the Sky Blues.

“First of all I am here for Sydney FC. Competing for Sydney FC.

“Then we hope, about the A-League growing up day by day and this is hard work.”

The striker also revealed the decision to move to Australia was made simple after being shown the challenge by Sydney FC.

“It was easy because the project is very interesting. In everybody there is soccer blood and we hope to wake up that.”

He also told the gathered media and supporters that he had worked hard on his conditioning since the end of his last Serie A season with Juventus, and wanted to fit into his new team as quickly as possible.

“I am coming from two months working with my personal trainer and a young team in Italy,” he said.

“I-ll do everything I can to stay in better condition. Now I need to go with the team.”
