Corica Calls For Ruthlessness

Sydney FC Head Coach Steve Corica has called for his squad to show their ruthlessness in front of goal against the Phoenix at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday afternoon (kick off 5:35pm AEDT).

The Sky Blues’ boss praised the way his side dominate games, however he’s stressed the need to finish off teams, drilling the message home ahead of their Round 20 away clash.

“We were very dominant in that game [against the Mariners], we just have to score more goals,” Corica said.

“That’s the message this week, the boys know it, just more ruthlessness, we’re the third leading goalscorers in the league so it’s not like we’re struggling to score.

“We just need to score more and take our chances and once we put the goals away it’ll make the games a lot easier and we’ll win games more comfortably.

“The boys are working hard and getting into great positions, it’s just about finishing the teams off.”

Although it’s listed as an away clash, Corica said he’s looking forward to turning out at a familiar venue in Campbelltown Stadium, with the Sky Blues having featured at the venue a number of times in pre-seasons past.

“We’re focussing on Wellington and about picking up three points,” Corica said.

“You want to win every game, it doesn’t matter whether it’s bottom or top you want to try and pick up three points. It’s a vital time of the year and you want to win games.

“We’re looking forward to the game against Wellington, it’s like a home game for us at Campbelltown Stadium, normally the pitch is really good there, we’re looking forward to playing there.”

As March nears, the AFC Champions League looms large for the Sky Blues, as Corica confirmed his squad would be finalised on Monday.

“The ACL is coming up pretty quick, we’ll name our squad on Monday,” he said.

“It’s going to be exciting, I’m looking forward to that as well. We want to win every game and we’ll see where we finish at the end of the season.”
