Sydney FC’s Under 18s are brimming with confidence heading into this Sunday’s Grand Final against Rockdale City Suns at Leichhardt Oval, as they look to cap off what has been a dominant season in style by claiming the title.
After securing their spot with a 3-1 win just two weeks ago over the same opponents they face this weekend, there is a high expectation around the Sky Blue camp that a title is well within reach in a few days time.
After finishing the season as Premiers and one hand seemingly on the title, Head Coach Jimmy van Weeren understands that nothing will be handed to them once they step on the field this weekend.
“It’s always hard against Rockdale, they’ve got a lot of quality in their side and we cant bank on anything at this point,” he said.
“We know they’re going to give us a good game but the boys are definitely up for it and I think our quality will be too good.”
While a Grand Final is a daunting task for some, the Sky Blues have been so consistently strong throughout the season that it will likely be business as usual once they get on the field, and the side and coaching staff have full belief in their abilities to come away with the win.
Van Weeren knows while a match of this magnitude is different, their preparation has remained the same in the lead up to keep the group as focused on winning as any other game.
“We’ve tried to keep things as normal as possible,” he said.
“We train for every game like it’s a Grand Final, every week and every night, and the players have bought into that, and its just about keeping things as normal as possible and wanting to go out there and get the win.”
There is an aura of confidence within the ranks, which is always a good sign heading into the proverbial ‘big dance’, and with the U20’s also in the Grand Final this Sunday, it could be a successful day for the Sky Blues.
