Captain’s Column: We’re Back In Action On Friday

The Hyundai A-League is back and we’re looking forward to getting underway again following a couple of weeks with no games.

That time has allowed us to not only freshen up following our trip to Japan, but work harder than ever to ensure we’re in top shape for the run to the Finals Series and our remaining AFC Champions League games.

There’s an added sense of excitement at training this week with Siem de Jong and Danny De Silva joining back in full training. It’s great to have these two back, they’ve brought fresh competition and hunger to our sessions and I’m expecting them to have a big impact on our final league standing.

It’s been a week of birthdays at training, with Head Coach Steve Corica enjoying his on Sunday, Josh Brillante on Monday, Assistant Coach Ufuk Talay on Tuesday and club legend Terry McFlynn on Wednesday. As is tradition, when it’s your birthday you bring in a cake, and all the cakes so far have been of a very high quality. If I’m picking a winner though, it’s a tie between Uffie’s baklava, because his wife hand made it, and Joshy’s cupcakes which were delicious.

Off the pitch all the boys are sending their best wishes to Benny Warland as he has surgery on his knee and commences his rehab. Ben has been a rock at the back for us this season and we’re all looking forward to seeing him back in Sky Blue real soon.

Looking ahead to Friday night we’re expecting another tough encounter at Suncorp Stadium, as all the games against the Roar are. We know what to do to win and we know what to do to ensure there’s no repeat of our last game up there.

That defeat at Suncorp was the most disappointing and hardest to take this season, the boys all feel the same and we’ve left no stone unturned this week to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

We’ve got a busy period coming up in April and a win on Friday after the break is the perfect way to set up a good run to the final stages of the season.
