Burgess Wants Winning Mentality

Fresh from scoring in the Westfield FFA Cup, Sydney FC’s Foxtel National Youth League midfielder Max Burgess has stressed the importance of continuing the Sky Blues winning mentality tomorrow night.

The Sky Blues take on Belconnen United at McKellar Park (kick off 7pm) and the 20 year old midfielder believes the squad have benefitted from their rigorous pre-season schedule to date.

“It’s important that we keep winning,” Burgess said.

“That’s just a habit you get in to. We’re targeting a clean sheet, to dominate possession, play good football and just keep improving tomorrow night.

“Preparations have been good, we’re all getting fitter and getting stronger in our shape and I feel like we’re looking good coming in to the game.

“I don’t think Canberra’s cold weather will impact the way we play to be honest,” he continued.

“If we keep to our structure and control the game I’m positive we’ll get the win.”

Reflecting on that Westfield FFA Cup round of 32 victory against Sorrento FC, Burgess said he was pleased to score and has set his sights on taking out the 2015 competition.

“It was a great experience to come back and make an impact in the FFA Cup,” he said.

“It was a tricky fixture and it was good to get through and obviously on a personal note it’s good to score.

“It’s more important though that we progress through to the next round and hopefully we can go all the way.”

Following a brief spell at the Newcastle Jets at the end of the 2014/15 season Burgess said he was pleased to be back at Sydney FC and is targeting a big year in the Foxtel National Youth League under new Head Coach Robbie Stanton.

“All the boys and coaching staff have been really welcoming,” he said.

“I feel really comfortable and I feel like I’m back at home.

“I haven’t had anything personal to do with him [Robbie Stanton] in the past,” he continued.

“He’s obviously got good pedigree and the conversations I’ve had with him so far excite me.

“I’m pretty positive and confident we’ll have a really good year.”
