Burgess given two match suspension

After receiving a red card in the Isuzu UTE A-League Semi-Final 2nd Leg, Max Burgess has been handed a two game suspension.

The challenge on Marco Tilio was upgraded from a yellow to a red card following the consultation of VAR and Burgess will serve his suspension in the next two competitive matches.

At least one of these matches will be in the Australia Cup Round of 32 which will begin in August with the draw yet to be made.

On Tuesday, 23 May 2023, the independent Match Review Panel (MRP) – consisting of Simon Micallef (Chair), Con Diomis and Alan Contini – convened to consider an incident involving Max Burgess (Burgess) of Sydney FC in or around the 20th minute of Sydney FC’s Isuzu UTE A-League Men Semi-Final Second Leg match against Melbourne City FC on Friday 19 May 2023.

In accordance with the A-Leagues Disciplinary Regulations (the Regulations), the MRP has the authority to consider the incident as Burgess was issued with a direct Red Card by the Referee.

The MRP determined that Burgess committed the offence of “Serious foul play (e.g., when challenging for the ball)”. The minimum sanction for the offence is one (1) match, being the Mandatory Match Suspension. The MRP confirmed a sanction of two (2) matches, being the minimum sanction for the offence plus one (1) additional week.
