From playing three games for 42 minutes in season 2014/15, Brandon O’Neill certainly announced himself to the Hyundai A-League in season 2015/16 after moving to the Sky Blues.
O’Neill’s maiden season with Sydney FC saw the 22 year old draw plaudits for his range of vision and passing, with the Perth born midfielder earning a call up to the Australian U-23 side as a result.
In total, O’Neill played 21 Hyundai A-League games for the Sky Blues, starting 16 of them, and accrued 1464 minutes of playing time.
Deployed mainly as a number 6, O’Neill completed the season with an 81% passing accuracy, with 735 of his 907 passes successful, as the 22 year old created 27 chances for the forward line, earning two assists.
Chipping in defensively, O’Neill won 35 of his 45 attempted tackles while making 22 clearances and 52 interceptions as the defensive midfielder launched numerous attacks from his ball recovery.
Undoubtedly one of O’Neill’s best highlights came in round three against the Western Sydney Wanderers, as a deftly weighted ball over the top from the Sky Blues’ number 13 found Milos Ninkovic who took one touch before dispatching the Sydney Derby winner at Allianz Stadium.
Season 2015/16 was a breakout season for O’Neill, and it will be the season he uses as a yardstick as he prepares for season 2016/17 in October.
