Berkeley Sports FC are Sydney FC-s Local Club of the Week and have won a $500 grant from St. George Bank after being entered into the competition by club Vice-President Marissa Carter who expressed her admiration for the club-s dedication to junior football.

15 years ago the club-s junior football teams folded due to various circumstances; however two years ago the Berkeley Sports FC-s men-s first grade Head Coach decided to re-create the junior football program all under the one banner of Berkeley Sports FC.

Today the club comprises of three Men-s senior teams, two Women-s senior teams and, since junior football was re-introduced, there are now two under six teams, two under sevens teams and an under 14-s girls team.

What makes Berkeley Sports FC so unique is its diversity and the manner with which the club has placed the needs of the children first.

“Berkeley is a mix of ethnicities, religions and incomes,” said club Vice-President Marissa Carter.

“Our aim is to keep registration fees low to encourage the children to get involved in not only playing football but being part of a team and not seeing the differences of each family.

“I could be a real mum and say if you met my kids who play under sevens they-re unique in themselves, but the real story behind Berkeley Sports FC is the rebirth of our juniors,” she continued.

“Are we unique, who knows? But we are special and doing something good for our kids and the local area.”

In winning the grant, to be presented in early June by Sydney FC players and Happy the Dragon from St. George Bank, Marissa said the money would be put back into the junior football program and would go a long way to acquiring new equipment.

“I-m very happy that this money can go back towards helping the kids,” Marissa Carter said.

“It-s a huge help. We-ll be buying bibs, cones, training balls for game day, kits for the coaches and pop up nets because we-re starting juniors from scratch and we don-t have any of that.

“Thankyou to Sydney FC and St. George, we-re just really grateful.”
