Taking on his first full season as a Westfield W-League Head Coach, Daniel Barrett is keen to stick to tradition as he hopes to guide the Sky Blues to another finals appearance during the Westfield W-League 2015/16 season.

Sydney FC’s Westfield W-League squad are yet to drop out of the competition any sooner than the semi-Final stage and that’s the minimum requirements for this season according to Barrett as he praised the make up of his squad ahead of round one.

“We want to obviously be there on the final day, we want to continue the tradition of success that our great club Sydney FC has had since season one,” Barrett said.

“We want to make our Members and supporters proud about how we go about our football week in and week out.

“Preparations have been good. The players are healthy and have a good understanding of their roles. Everyone is in good spirits and eager to begin.

“I have a real selection headache this weekend with the performances that have been on display this pre-season. It’s a good problem to have and I hope to have this problem week in week out.

“I have really seen some leaders stand up this year, new voices leading and encouraging our younger ones around the park demanding more and ensuring standards are high. It’s a case of disregard the age of the player because the maturity is there this season.”

First up for Barrett is the newly assembled Melbourne City FC at Lambert Park, Leichhardt on Sunday and it’s a match up the Sky Blues Head Coach is relishing

“I am expecting an extremely tough match, they boast a world class squad brimming with international experience,” he said.

“Everyone wants to get off to a good start and we believe in keeping the focus on what we do best rather than our opponent. We don’t know how as a group they will take us on so keeping the focus on us has been the best way to prepare.

“If we do what we do best, then they will have to worry about our whole team. That’s the way we combat their stars,” he continued.

“We know how to win our way. We just have to ensure we take those steps come kick off. Pre-season has served its purpose and it’s definitely time to move on so I welcome game one.”
