Arnold Chasing More Records

With one hand firmly on a second consecutive Premiers’ Plate, Sydney FC Head Coach Graham Arnold is eyeing records with the Sky Blues over the remainder of the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 Season.

The Sky Blues produced another masterclass at AAMI Park on Saturday night, dismantling in-form Melbourne City 4-0.

The result has opened up a 12 point gap at the top of the ladder, with second-placed Newcastle Jets not in action until next weekend.

It’s been another phenomenal campaign for Sydney FC, currently on 49 points from 20 matches as they look to break the records they set in their double-winning campaign of 2016/17.

“We’re chasing our record from last year,” Arnold told reporters on Saturday night.

“We’re two points ahead of that. We’ve got nine goals more than what we had last year.

“That’s how I motivate the boys.

“66 points is the greatest in the history of Australian football and we’re chasing 67 points.

“There’s still 21 points to play for and we’re on 49 points so we’ve got a possibility of getting 70 and that’s what we’re after.”

In an entertaining clash against City, both sides had early chances before the Sky Blues took control with two goals in 11 minutes just before the break.

Bobo celebrates

Further goals to Bobô – his second of the match – and Adrian Mierzejewski in the second half made it five straight wins over City.

“It could have been more,” Arnold said.

“We missed a couple of one on ones and also one cleared off the line.

“When you have the quality of players of Ninkovic and Bobo and Adrian and Brosquey, it’s dangerous if you leave space.”

While the Sky Blues aren’t in action in the Hyundai A-League for two weeks when they host Western Sydney Wanderers in the Sydney Derby, they begin their AFC Champions League campaign this week.

Sydney FC host K-League outfit Suwon Bluewings, with ex-Sky Blues defender Matthew Jurman likely to come up against his former club.
