Academy Prospect Wataru Promoted

Sydney FC have completed the signing of Academy star Wataru Kamijo on a three-year contract to the Isuzu-UTE A-League squad.

The 17-year-old central midfielder is promoted after a series of impressive performances for the Sky Blues Under 20’s squad during the NPL season.

Kamijo is considered one of the best rated young midfielders in the country and Head Coach Steve Corica believes he will improve the Sky Blues squad.

“He has a lot of potential, he’s a very technical player, he is aggressive, and we think he will develop into a very good player,” he said.

“He gives us more depth and energy in the squad, and I’ve no doubt he will challenge to play minutes in the first team this season.

“This is the youngest squad in our history, and I think the balance and blend of the players we have will serve us extremely well.

“It’s already looking like an exciting year.”

Kamijo, who has also represented Australian schoolboys at under 16’s level, says he is excited to be making the step up.

“It’s a big jump but it’s a good environment and it pushes me in a good way,” he said.

“It’s a very intense environment but it makes me think quicker, play quicker and be more aggressive.

“I feel like I can learn a lot from the likes of Brattsy and Caceres, even just watching their games.

“I’ve always looked up to Kevin De Bruyne as well, his passing range and vision are the things I want to emulate.

“Steve has told me not to be scared and to show him what I can do.”

Kamijo is already training with the Sydney FC first team squad and will wear the number 24 shirt.
