Four Sydney FC Academy players who are currently with the Australian U17’s in Thailand for the AFC U17 Asian Cup have navigated their way through the Group Stage.
After three matches, the Joeys have made it through to the quarter final with Sydney FC Academy players having a key role in securing progression to the knockout stages of the Asian Cup that doubles as qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup.
Australian U17’s played three matches in the group, losing their opening game to Saudi Arabia, eventual group winners, before two thrilling performances to close out the group. A 5-3 thriller came against China in which 17 year old Mitch Glasson, Sydney FC Academy star, assisted two and scored one over the 90 minutes.
Last night, the Joeys took on Tajikistan and while it wasn’t their best performance, were able to get the win or draw required to progress, scoring twice in the second half to win 2-0.
Well done to Zach De Jesus, Mitch Glasson, Richard Nkomo and Tiago Quintal on their progression to the next round. It is likely that they will play Japan or else Uzbekistan in the Quarter Finals which will be a tough task.
