Sydney FC Head Coach Steve Corica says he’s flattered with the comparisons between the Sky Blues’ record-breaking 2016/17 squad and the current one, but stressed there’s still a long way to go in the season before comparisons like that can stick.
With Sydney FC soaring in first place with an exciting brand of football, the Sky Blues have outscored and accrued more points at this stage of the season than the club’s all-conquering Premiership and Championship winners.
However ahead of tomorrow night’s home clash with Central Coast Mariners at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium (7.30pm kick off), Corica called for more consistent performances if his charges are to become the next record breakers.
“It’s nice to be compared to that great squad but there’s a long way to go and a lot of hard work to be done,” Corica stated.
“It’s nice they’re talking about that because we’re playing some good football and winning games which is great and we want that to continue.
“The performances have to be consistent over the course of the season, we want to do our best for the club.
“They [the players] are enjoying their football, when you enjoy your football you play at your best and I think we still have improvement to go,” he continued.
“The boys are enjoying playing together, working hard for each other, they’re enjoying scoring goals and there were some real great goals last week. They have a real hunger to win games and that’s the main thing.”
In a further sign of flattery, Corica said he wasn’t surprised that other clubs were out to sign Sydney FC’s current crop of stars, however the Sky Blues’ Head Coach reaffirmed his desire to retain the players that have delivered such recent success.
“When you’re doing really well the other clubs come poaching,” he said.
“There’s been a lot of clubs that have come in for our players but that’s understandable because we’re doing well and they’re quality players and we expect that.
“We’re doing our best to keep all of them and we want to keep all of them because we believe we have a great culture here.
“The boys are a great bunch of boys that work hard for each other and the more we keep our core squad together the better for us.”
