Summary
Sydney FC 0 def. by Central Coast Mariners 2 (Hoole 19’, McGing 56’)
Sydney FC have gone down for only the second time in 19 competition games with a 2-0 defeat to Central Coast Mariners in Gosford.
Former Sky Blue Andrew Hoole found the net midway through the first half before Jake McGing notched a second half header.
A rejuvenated Sydney FC side came close to levelling the tie late on with chances for Buijs and Wilkinson, the latter hitting the post, while Mariners defender Alan Baro was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Sydney FC will bounce back next week at home to Newcastle Jets.
What They Said
Graham Arnold: “We worked hard, Mariners were red hot tonight, got to give them credit.
“End of the day, it’s our first defeat in 19 games (including FFA Cup games). When you win, you win, when you lose, you learn.
“We go in expecting to win every game and it just hasn’t worked out this week. Tomorrow’s a new day and we look forward to three games next week starting with Newcastle at home.
“Our second half was dominant and if one of those chances goes in with ten to go, it can be a different game.”
Goals
19’ GOAL HOOLE – Mariners Da Silva plays a through ball to Hoole who finishes into the bottom left.
56’ GOAL McGING – Hoole’s corner finds McGing in the box who heads it towards goal, hitting the bar before dropping into the net.
Key Moments
35’ WELL READ WILKINSON – Pain attempts to play a driven ball across the face of the Sky Blues’ goal but Wilkinson cuts out the danger well.
43’ GREAT DEFENDING WILKINSON – Mariners look to penetrate down the left hand side but Wilkinson is again on hand to cut out the driven cross with Zullo clearing the danger.
45+4’ SO CLOSE CARNEY – Carney and Brosque play a great one-two down the right. Carney cuts inside and fires a shot from outside the box which is deflected and just goes wide.
71’ TOO STRONG BUIJS – Appiah-Kubi uses his pace to nod the ball on for himself before being closed down by the big Dutchman and forcing a rushed shot.
76’ WELL READ REDMAYNE – Hoole is in behind Sydney FC’s defence to play a dangerous ball across but Redmayne reads it well to tip away from an on rushing Mariner.
77’ CHANCE BOBÔ – Bobo finds himself outside the box with the ball bobbling and takes a shot but it goes over the right of the post.
83’ OFF THE POST WILKINSON – Buijs puts the ball into the box from a freekick to find Wilkinson at the back post only for the Sky Blues’ defender to hit the post.
88’ SO UNLUCKY BUIJS – An in swinging ball is whipped in by Zullo, directed to a straining Simon. The Sydney forward can’t manage to get contact but Buijs is at the back post to volley it towards goal only to be denied by Kennedy.
89’ HEADED CHANCE BRILLANTE – Sydney FC work the ball well around the Mariners’ box before a cross is met by Brillante who nods it just over the bar.
CCM 2-0 @SydneyFC They were better than us & deserved to win. Next game is at home. We will play better. #CCMvSFC #SydneyIsSkyBlue
