Sydney FC Westfield W-League Captain Teresa Polias has told Members and fans to expect surprises this season, with a reinvigorated squad for 2017/18.
Polias highlighted the number of Young Matildas and Matildas in the squad as something for the Members and fans to keep an eye out for, as the new season gets underway at Allianz Stadium on Friday afternoon against Brisbane Roar (kick off 5:20pm).
“There’s some amazing young ones coming up and I’m sure come Friday there will be a few surprise packages people see out there,” Polias said.
“We’ve still got the Young Matildas away as well so there’s a bit of depth in the squad. There are legends returning, Kylie Ledbrook has come back, it’s a dream for me because she’s one of my all-time favourite players to have played with.
“Lisa De Vanna is an exciting player but we’ve got some really good young players,” she emphasised.
“Amy Harrison is looking really good in pre-season, the whole squad is looking good and I hope we really take that into the season and are up there where we should be.
“We always go out to win, we want everything, the Premiership, we want to be Champions and we’re aiming as high as we can.
“There’s promising signs out there at the moment but we’ve got to go out there and do our job.”
Pre-season has taken on a different feel with new Head Coach Ante Juric leading proceedings, and Polias said she’s enjoyed the new regime, as she eyes Friday’s clash against Brisbane Roar.
“Lots of exciting things have been happening under Ante, a lot of promising signs,” Polias said.
“He promotes a really positive style of football which isn’t necessarily different from the past but it’s been a fresh change and a real positive for us.
“It’s been quite a gruelling pre-season but one we really needed and I haven’t felt this fit in a few years. It’s exciting times and hopefully it all comes together.
“We hit the sand dunes a number of times and there’s really positive things from it. Many years ago in the NSWIS times we had a few visits to the dunes so it’s been a while but Ante’s pre-season methods are a mixture of things, and for me it’s really beneficial.
“It’s going to be great playing as curtain raisers, women’s football is really on the map at the moment, we’ve got a lot of fans and for them to be able to see us at the stadium is special as well,” she continued.
“Brisbane Roar is always a massive rivalry, since season one. They’ve got some really great players, some Matildas, two or three great internationals so it’s going to be a tight, very attacking game.
“It’s a good game to start off the season.”
