He might not usually attract the same attention as some of the higher profile members of the Sydney FC squad but, after scoring one of the goals of the season last Saturday, that looks set to change for Terry McFlynn.
He might not usually attract the same attention as some of the higher profile members of the Sydney FC squad but, after scoring one of the goals of the season last Saturday, that looks set to change for Terry McFlynn.
The midfielder-s 2nd minute finish set the tone for Sydney-s round 5 clash with Adelaide United, and added another attacking weapon to his side-s already impressive arsenal.
“I normally keep them for practice, I-m not renowned for scoring goals,” said McFlynn of his stunning strike. “Poppa played a great ball through to Brosquey and I just took a gamble, made a run off the defender and thankfully Brosquey picked me out and I just hit it.”
It-s no fluke the former Northern Ireland international found himself up front, with the 27-year-old enjoying a more attacking role with Sydney this-season.
“It-s a little bit different, I didn-t really move up as much in the first couple of seasons,” explained McFlynn. “Now having a player like Stuart Musialik sitting anchor in the midfield gives me a bit more of a licence to get forward.”
It-s a role that seems to be suiting the long-time Sydney starter who, like his team, is enjoying some of the best form of his Hyundai A-League career.
“Obviously you-re enjoying your football when you-re winning and 5 games unbeaten. I think the spirit is really good and upbeat in the whole camp and we-re just really looking forward to each game,” he said.
A long-range rocket from replacement, Brendon Santalab late in the game sparked plenty of debate about which of Sydney-s goals was the best in its 3 nil win over Adelaide, but McFlynn isn-t buying into the argument.
“We had a little bit of banter, but I think Santa-s more renowned for scoring spectacular goals,” he said. “He (Santalab) got 2 last season, including the goal of the season down in Adelaide, so I-m happy for Santa to take the accolades on that one as well.”
