Sydney dominated possession in its first game of the 2009 season, creating a host of clear chances. Only one was converted, however, and Sarah Walsh-s second-half equaliser couldn-t deny a Michelle Heyman-inspired Mariners outfit.
“The goal wasn-t enough on the weekend against the Central Coast so I guess the good feeling was short-lived, but we can only go up from here,” said Walsh.
“There were a lot of things he (Sydney FC coach Alen Stajcic) wanted us to do which we didn’t execute,” continued the Matilda-s striker. “Finishing has just been an area where we lack composure in the front third.”
Ravaged by injury last season, Walsh is keen for a successful comeback in 2009 with Sydney FC after a stint in the United States earlier in the year. The 26-year old says with only nine matches remaining in the ten game regular season, Sydney must quickly find form, starting this weekend against Canberra United.
“Confidence might be one of our problems,” she explained. “We-re confident going into every game but confidence and names on paper don-t win you games – it-s what you produce on game day.”
“We-re not really looking at their (Canberra-s) team, we-re looking to fix the problems that we have at the moment,” she said. “I feel if we play our best football, not many teams can match us, it-s just a matter of us finding our form and that has to happen quickly because it-s only a short league.”
Sydney-s round-2 Westfield W-League clash with last season-s beaten Grand Finalist will kick off at 5pm this Saturday at McKellar Park in Canberra.
