Sydney dominate goal fest against Glory
By Ben Hawkins and Alex Milic
A four goal first half set up a convincing 5-2 win for Sydney FC in their Westfield W-League match at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.
A thirty-five metre effort from Glory striker Samantha Kerr gave Perth a surprise early lead after a dominant opening five minutes for the glory.
But from then on it was one-way-traffic for Sydney as they piled on three goals in seven minutes to quickly assert their control over the contest.
Sydney opened their account following a penalty area indiscretion which saw star striker Leena Khamis taken to ground in the tenth minute.
The penalty was coolly slotted by Julie Rydahl into the top corner of the net to erase the deficit. This was followed by two goals in quick succession to Khamis, who put in a dominant performance for the match.
Her powerful strike into the right hand corner in the fourteenth minute was complemented by clever finish from the goal line five minutes later to double Sydney-s advantage.
It was a dominant display from Khamis who could have easily finished with a hat-trick if not for a few near misses.
She has her sights firmly set on bettering last season-s tally of seven goals for the season. “I-m very happy for adding to my tally. I would be very pleased if I were to equal last season-s effort,” Khamis said.
“We played our best game of the season, and I-m pleased with my performance … I believe we have what it takes to win the league,” Khamis said.
After Cathrin Paaske headed in a well taken corner in the thirty-ninth minute the match virtually over at 4-1, a lead they would take into half time.
Substitute Lisa De Vanna gave the Glory some hope capitalising on an out-of-position Deiter in the sixty-first minute, but a well earned goal from Sarah Walsh late in the game put any hope of a Glory revival to rest.
The win extends Sydney-s unbeaten run to seven and has them equal on points with league leaders the Roar who are yet to play this round.
Sydney travel to Hindmarsh Stadium next week to take on Adelaide.
