McFlynn joins NRL star to help battle kids cancer

Sydney FC captain Terry McFlynn will join NRL star Benji Marshall on Friday 4 March at the Children-s Cancer Institute Australia-s (CCIA) first annual Footy Rocks, a night of sporting legends, food and music.

As the Institute-s new ambassador, Marshall and his fellow sports stars will be raising much needed funds for childhood cancer research.

Footy Rocks will be a night to remember, with true Aussie sporting heroes spearheading the event including Marshall and McFlynn as well as players from the Waratahs, the Roosters and the Wests Tigers.

“Footy Rocks is a wonderful opportunity for athletes from all codes of the football community to come together to help save the lives of kids with cancer,” says Benji Marshall.

“I-m so excited and honoured to be an official ambassador for Children-s Cancer Institute Australia, having witnessed firsthand the horrible impact that childhood cancer has on Australian children and their families.”

Footy Rocks will be a black tie evening of surprise performances, a delicious four-course dinner and several hours of live music and dance. A special auction will sell off once-in-a-lifetime items to the highest bidder, including one-on-one training sessions with some of Australia-s most elite athletes.

Footy Rocks aims to raise in excess of $250,000 for medical research at CCIA to help save the lives of kids with cancer and eliminate their suffering.

“This is a tremendous cause and if I can help in any little way I will. Benji should be applauded for leading this battle and I will help him fight this fight,” McFlynn said.

“Seeing a child ill is truly horrible so hopefully we can raise a lot of money on the night and help improve the life of as many kids as possible.”

Professor Michelle Haber AM, CCIA Executive Director said: “This new funding will go directly towards the drug discovery of new, targeted cancer therapeutics for young kids with cancer.”

The Institute-s new ACRF Drug Discovery Centre for Childhood Cancer Research completes one year’s medical research in just days. It is the only one of its kind in Australia devoted to childhood cancer research.
