Sydney FC have announced their new squad numbers for the 2012/13 Hyundai A-League season with ten new players wearing new shirts, and many with special reasons for requesting particular numbers.

Shirt numbers are symbolic for many of the players, including Iraqi international Ali Abbas who wears the number 22 shirt following Nathan Sherlock-s move into the number 5, vacated by Michael Beauchamp.
“The number 22 is very special to me,” he said. “My big brother Ayad Abbas used to wear it when he played professionally for Police Club in Iraq. He then came to support me when I was a young player and he wanted me to have the number.
“My idol in Iraq was a guy called Fawzi Abdul-Sada who played for Zawra, a club I used to play for. He also wore the number 22. I used to like watching him play because he was a really good player.”
Croatian striker Kruno Lovrek has been given honour of wearing his favoured number 19. It-s a shirt Sydney FC fans will remember star striker Dwight Yorke wore in season one while Mark Bridge scored in the Grand Final of 2010 wearing the number 19.
However there’s another reason Kruno wanted the jersey.
“Nineteen is my lucky number and I believe I play well with number,” said Lovrek.
“I have it tattooed on my hand and bicep.”
Among other changes, Fabio will wear his preferred number 3, after the departure of Jamie Coyne and Adam Griffiths takes over number 8 from Karol Kisel. Mitch Mallia will revive the number 14 shirt and Yairo Yau will play in 21.
“I wanted number 14 because Brosquey wore that jersey when he played for the club and I want to become a club legend like him,” said youngster Mallia.
The changes will be introduced at Sydney FC-s first friendly clash with NSW Premier League side Macarthur Rams at Campbelltown Stadium on Tuesday 14 August.
