Sydney FC has secured the future of Matildas midfielder Sarah Hunter, with the 22-year-old signing a new one-year contract to remain in Sky Blue.
Hunter returned to Sydney FC last season following two years with Paris FC in France, having previously been a key member of the Sky Blues’ 2022 and 2023 Premiership winning squads, as well as the Championship Double in 2023.
A former Sydney FC Young Player of the Year and A-League Women Young Footballer of the Year, Hunter also made her senior Matildas debut against Canada in December 2023.
The midfielder has continued playing throughout the off-season in the NPL NSW competition and believes a full season back in Australia has her well placed to make a major impact in 2026-27.
“I’m really happy to have signed for another year and to know my future is with Sydney FC,” Hunter said.
“Having a season back in the A-League under my belt, as well as continuing to play in the NPL NSW during the off-season, I’m feeling really good physically and ready to push on.
“We all want a much better season this year and I’m confident we’ll get that. We’ve got some fantastic players coming back into the squad and I’m really excited by the group we’re putting together.”
Head Coach James Slaveski believes Hunter’s quality and leadership will be important to the Sky Blues this season.
“Sarah is an excellent footballer technically, she understands the game extremely well and she gives us real leadership on the pitch,” Slaveski said.
“She has the ability to dictate games from midfield and I’m excited to see her working alongside players like Maddie Caspers, Shay Hollman and Amy Chessari.
“There’s a lot of quality and energy within that group and Sarah’s experience and composure will be hugely important for us.”
Sydney FC’s A-League Women squad will return to Sky Park in September to begin pre-season training ahead of the 2026-27 Ninja A-League campaign.
