Sydney FC’s Teenage Star’s Deal Extended

Sydney FC has extended the contract of exciting teenage winger Akol Akon by another year, ensuring he will remain in Sky Blue until the end of the A-League 2028-29 season.

The 17-year-old, who will play a major role in the FIFA U17 World Cup later this year, enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough campaign in 2025-26, setting numerous records and becoming one of the competition’s brightest emerging talents.

His extension is indicative of the Sky Blues commitment to developing the young A-League and Socceroo players of the future.

In one standout performance, he produced three assists in Sydney FC’s emphatic 4-1 Sydney Derby victory over Western Sydney Wanderers at Allianz Stadium.

“I’m really happy to be staying at Sydney FC. I’ve loved my first season with the club and learned so much from the coaches and the senior players every day,” he said.

“To be able to secure my future here means a lot to me. I feel like this is the perfect place to keep improving as a player, and I’m excited to continue working hard and helping the team achieve success over the next few years.”

Akon became the youngest player to represent Sydney FC’s Men at just 16 years, two months and 21 days when he made his debut against Sydney United 58 in the Australia Cup in August.

He also became the youngest player to start an A-League Men’s Grand Final and Finals Series match.

Akol Akon becoming the youngest starter in Australian National League history.

Sydney FC Men’s Head Coach Patrick Kisnorbo believes Akon has earned his extension through his performances and attitude.

“Akol has deserved this contract extension through the way he has applied himself every day and the performances he has produced,” Kisnorbo said.

“He has earned his game-time on merit and it shows we are building a culture where young players are rewarded if they perform.

“He’s only scratching the surface of what he’s capable of, and we’re looking forward to helping him continue his development over the coming seasons.”

The contract extension follows the activation of a clause based on the number of first-team appearances Akon made during the 2025-26 season.

Akon played 17 times and has also represented Australia’s under 17’s on eight occasions.
