Sydney FC captain Rhyan Grant says there is no better opportunity to respond than the Sydney Derby, as the Sky Blues prepare to host Western Sydney Wanderers at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.
Following a frustrating performance last weekend, Grant admitted standards fell short but believes the derby presents the ideal chance to reset.
“Our last game wasn’t great — it was a terrible performance from us,” Grant said.
“But there’s no better game than this week to turn it around, show a bit of grunt and really earn those three points.”
“We’re looking forward now and hopefully we can do that in front of a great crowd and a massive atmosphere.”

Perspective amid pressure
Despite recent results, Grant stressed the team’s position in the league remains strong.
“We’re still only three points off top with a game in hand,” he said.
“As much as people might think it’s a worry, we know we’re one win away from being in a really good position.”
Behind the scenes, the focus has been on unity and clarity.
“We’re sticking together, staying positive and putting last weekend behind us,” Grant said.
“This Saturday is a massive game and that’s where our focus is.”
Driving standards as captain
As captain, Grant acknowledged his responsibility to ensure the group understands the magnitude of the occasion.
“It’s very important that the boys know what this game is about,” he said.
“This fixture means everything to the fans, and we heard that on the weekend — and it was justified.”
“For some players, hearing that and seeing how much it means should help us come out, play with heart, show some grit and really represent this badge properly.”

Prepared for the challenge
Grant expects another fierce contest, regardless of form.
“This game is always difficult,” he said.
“There have been good results and bad results for both teams over the years — that’s what makes it such a massive game.”
On facing Wanderers winger Ryan Fraser, Grant said preparation is already underway.
“They’ve got dangerous players all over the park,” he said.
“Fraser came on and made a big impact last weekend, so I’ll be doing my homework like I do every week.”
“If I can nullify him, it’ll go a long way to helping the team.”
A boost with Lolley’s return
Grant welcomed the return of Joe Lolley, describing his availability as a major lift for the squad.
“If Joe’s not the best player in the league, he’s very close to it,” Grant said.
“Any team would miss a player like Joe.”

“Whether he starts or comes off the bench, just having him back gives us a boost of confidence.”
Grant dismissed concerns around goalscoring, backing the squad’s attacking depth.
“We’ve got goals all over the park,” he said.
“Joe will make a difference, whether that’s scoring or setting them up.”
Playing for the fans
Living locally in Bondi, Grant said supporters have made the importance of the derby abundantly clear.
“Fans come up and let you know how important these games are,” he said.
“Football in Australia is bigger than people think, and this fixture means a lot to a lot of people.”
“That’s something I really want the boys to understand — how much this game matters to our fans.”
The perfect moment
Grant believes the timing of the derby could not be better.
“It’s the perfect time,” he said.
“If we win, we go top, and it’s against our biggest rivals.”
“After a bad performance, you always want a quick turnaround — and it doesn’t get much bigger than this.”
“This game is about passion, heart and playing for the badge. It’s the ideal chance to get back on track.”
