Sydney FC defender Marcel Tisserand says he can’t wait to step into his first Sydney Derby this Saturday night, embracing the challenge and intensity of one of the A-League’s fiercest rivalries.
The Congolese international has already played in several major derbies across the world, including the fiery Galatasaray–Fenerbahçe rivalry in Turkey, but says he’s buzzing for what awaits at CommBank Stadium.
“Yeah, excited… excited for that game,” Tisserand said.
“It’s a big game. Everybody wants to play in a big game like this.”

Understanding the Occasion
Tisserand says his teammates have made it clear just how much the derby means to the club, the fans, and the city.
“It means a lot for us because if we win, it’s going to be the fifth win in a row,” he explained.
“It hasn’t happened for maybe five years, so it’s something big for us. We’re excited — we can’t wait.”
And while he’s been in Sydney only a short time, he already understands the heated history between the Sky Blues and Wanderers.
“It’s normal — derbies get heated,” he smiled.
“I’ve played in some big ones, especially in Turkey. I’m here to play these kinds of games. So… let’s go.”
Sky Park Full of Confidence
Coming into the derby off the back of strong form, Tisserand says the mood at Sky Park is electric.
“If you come into Sky Park, you’ll see everybody smiling and happy to be here,” he said.
“We’re working together, the women’s team is doing great as well, and the facilities are amazing.
“We’re just happy to work together and keep winning like we’re doing now.”
Admiring Joe Lolley’s Leadership Up Front
The centre-back also praised the impact of Joe Lolley, who has been in blistering form leading Sydney’s attack.
“He’s a top player — you can see it,” Tisserand said.
“This guy is ready, he’s fit, and we’re going to need him on Saturday.
“I’m making sure I don’t go too hard on him in training this week… because we need him.”
Respect for the Wanderers
Despite Sydney’s confidence, Tisserand says the squad remains focused on the challenge ahead and respectful of the Wanderers’ quality.
“They’re one of the best teams in the league,” he said.
“They’ve got some good players, so we need to stay focused.”

Learning the League — And Loving Life in Sydney
Still only a handful of matches into his A-League journey, Tisserand says he’s enjoying learning about the competition and its opponents.
“I’m always learning everywhere I go,” he said.
“It’s only a five-game journey now, so it’s just the beginning. We’ve started well, but it’s still the beginning.”
When asked what he’s enjoyed most so far, his answer came quickly.
“My favourite thing is to win, of course,” he laughed.
“But also to spend more time with my family.
“The schedule here is different to Saudi or Turkey, so I get more time with them — even going to the beach or discovering the city.
“That’s a really good thing for me.”
