Sydney FC has completed the permanent signing of Alexandar Popovic on a three-and-a-half-year contract, following the conclusion of his successful loan spell with the club.
The Sky Blues have struck an agreement to sign the centre half for an undisclosed fee with Gwangju FC in Korea, ensuring the highly-rated Young Socceroo will remain part of Sydney FC’s defensive line until 2028.
Popovic’s loan was initially set to expire at the end of January, but some excellent performances have prompted the club to make his stay permanent.
The 22-year-old has quickly become a fan favourite and is delighted to have secured his future.
“I couldn’t be happier to commit my long-term future to Sydney FC,” he said.
“This is a special club with a proud history, and I’ve felt at home here since day one.
“The coaching staff, my teammates, and the Members and fans have all been incredible, and I’m determined to repay their faith in me.
“My goal is to help the team win trophies and build on the success this club has enjoyed over the years.
“I also want to continue developing as a player and further my international prospects.”
Sydney FC Head Coach Ufuk Talay lauded Popovic’s impact and potential, emphasizing the defender’s importance to the squad.
“Alexandar has been very good since joining us,’ he said.
“He has shown maturity, composure, and technical ability and will be key to our defensive structure going forward.
“He’s only going to get better from here and has all the attributes to achieve great things in his career.”
Popovic has played 11 times for the Sky Blues.
