Sydney FC have made history, setting a new all-time Australian goalscoring record after netting at least three goals in their last eight consecutive home matches in all competitions.
This remarkable feat surpasses the previous record of six, firmly establishing the Sky Blues as the country’s most prolific attacking side on home soil.
The Sky Blues had already written their names into the record books last week by becoming the first Australian club to reach seven consecutive home games with three or more goals, including the AFC Champions League 2 clash with Kaya FC which they won 3-1.
That streak has been extended to eight, further underlining their attacking flair in front of their passionate home supporters.
Sydney FC also remain on the verge of another significant milestone ahead of this Saturday’s much anticipated Sydney Derby at Allianz Stadium (kick off 7.35pm).
The current run of seven straight home A-League matches with three or more goals in national league games equals a long-standing record set by Heidelberg during the 1979-80 seasons (this record was split by a cup game where they scored only 2 goals hence doesn’t qualify for all competitions).
In the Sydney Derby against arch-rivals Western Sydney Wanderers the Sky Blues have a chance to claim this title outright and continue their assault on the history books.
Head Coach Ufuk Talay emphasised the importance of playing entertaining football for the club’s devoted supporters, who have turned out in numbers to witness the attacking masterclass on display at Allianz Stadium.
“The game is about entertainment,” he said. “We have fans that come into our home games that spend their hard-earned money and want to be entertained, and I think we definitely do try to entertain.
“I understand that there are always three outcomes to a game – win, lose, or draw – but we always set the team up to win, and we want to win playing a certain brand.
“We want to entertain our fans that work hard during the week and spend their money to come watch us.”
Sydney FC’s relentless attacking approach has been a key factor in their record-breaking run, with the team consistently delivering exciting and entertaining performances at home.
This Saturday’s Sydney Derby will have all eyes on the Sky Blues to see if they can continue re-writing Australian football history and break Heidelberg’s record.
