Ibini Set To Break A-Leagues Grand Final Appearance Record

Sydney FC’s Liberty A-League forward Princess Ibini will break the A-Leagues Men’s & Women’s record for Grand Final appearances when the Sky Blues take on Melbourne City in their seventh consecutive Grand Final this weekend.

The 24-year old will move ahead of Sky Blues legends Teresa Polias and Alex Wilkinson, as well as Matildas midfielder Avi Luik (all 7 appearances) when she leads out the team at AAMI Park for her eighth (8th) Grand Final.

Ibini made her Grand Final debut in 2016 as a 16-year-old against Melbourne City which the Sky Blues lost 4-1.

The club missed the 2017 instalment but has made every iteration since 2018 and Ibini has has featured in all.

“It’s an amazing achievement for me personally,” she said. “To play with so many amazing players along the way and to have made so many friendships and have people in my life forever is something I’ll cherish.

“Sydney FC is the biggest club in Australia so being able to have a legacy here would be amazing, not just for me but all the girls involved as well.

“It’s crazy to think that at only 24, I’m one of the most experienced as I still feel so young, but then I talk to some of the younger girls at training who are graduating school this year and it really sinks in that I’m much older.

Ibini has won two of her Grand Finals including last season alongside team captain Natalie Tobin who she deputizes for this weekend.

And the striker has some sage learnings to give her younger crew.

“The only advice I could give is to just enjoy the experience as it’s a privilege to play in a Grand Final.

“Some people go their whole careers without playing in one so just cherish the moment and give it all you’ve got.”

Ibini is confident the Sky Blues can get the job done and defend the Championship that they won last season.

“We are not feeling any pressure and the girls know the job we have to do,” the stand-in Captain said.

“We have worked hard all season to get to this position and we are excited to play.

“Personally, for me it wasn’t my best season and I know that, but being able to Captain these wonderful girls throughout has been amazing.

“I have really grown into my own throughout the season and have definitely found my feet in this new role.

“I’m proud of everyone this season with everything we have faced but the jobs not done yet.”

Ibini will make her 140th appearance for the Sky Blues over nine seasons and has scored 28 goals.
