The Australian Olyroos have kicked off their West Asian Football Federation U23 Championship with a 2-1 win over Iraq in Saudi Arabia.
First-half goals from Louis D’Arrigo and Alou Kuol had the Aussies in a commanding position after 15 minutes before Iraq pulled one back from Halgwrd Jaafar four minutes after half time.
Having flown to Saudi Arabia straight from New Zealand on Sunday, the three Sky Blues in the squad all started the match on the bench with Jake Girdwood-Reich the only player to see minutes when he replaced Hosine Bility at centre back in the 71st minute.
Jordan Courtney-Perkins and Corey Hollman were unused substitutes.
A special mention to current Sydney FC loanee, Adrian Segecic who started the match and had an impressive performance against the Iraqis.
The Olyroos will now take on Egypt, who overcame the UAE 1-0 in the opening round thanks to a goal from Bilal Abdulrahman.
