Matildas Showdown – Whyman & Heyman

Sydney FC goal keeper Jada Whyman and Canberra United forward Michelle Heyman will go head-to-head this Saturday evening in the Liberty A-League competition after each receiving the call up to represent Australia in a two-match series for round three of the AFC Women’s Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifiers.

The two representatives for the Matildas will be playing on behalf of their A-League squads as they face off for round 17 at McKellar Park. As the back end of the season starts to approach, both players will be gunning to bring home three vital points for their respective side to keep their Premiership and finals dreams alive.

After 14 caps across Junior and Youth squads, as well as the Matildas Under 20 team, Jada Whyman is looking to make her international debut at the top level.

The 24 year-old was invited to train with Tony Gustavsson’s side in 2021. In December 2023, Whyman was named in the squad for a friendly two match series against Canada.

The Wiradjuri and Yorta Yorta woman has had an impeccable A-League career with two back-to-back honours for the Westfield W-League Player of the Year with the Western Sydney Wanderers. For the 2023/2024 season, she has demonstrated outstanding form. Keeping the most clean sheets out of any goal keeper this season, Whyman has cemented herself as one of the most influential players on the field in the Liberty A-League.

Former Olympian, Michelle Heyman is taking a second chance on international football after securing a spot in the Matildas squad after six years.

The striker has had an impressive history in Australian football. Commencing her international career in 2010, Heyman went on to play in the 2014 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio before announcing her retirement from representative football in 2019.

In 2021, Heyman was announced as the all-time goal scorer in the A-League Women, a title she still holds today after netting 106 goals over a 16 year career. Heyman is a force to be reckoned with on the pitch and will be no easy challenge on the weekend.
