Sydney FC’s female development squad reached a landmark this week with their first ever game at Sky Park.
A mix of 14-16 year old girls, who came together in November to form the first Sky Blues squad, took on North West Sydney Spirit in an early trial match ahead of the 2024 season.
A competitive game over 3 x 30 minute periods ended in a win to the home team in front of a good crowd on the Northern Synthetic Field.
“It’s a milestone moment for our Female Pathways and I was delighted to see so many parents, staff and supporters there to see it,” said Sydney FC Chief Executive Officer Mark Aubrey.
“Our female development squad is an integral part of our plans to build a successful pathway for young female footballers and give them an opportunity of a professional career.
“It’s great to see us continue to make regular progress with those plans and add value to the existing pathways within the NPL space.
“I’d like to thank all clubs, associations and North West Sydney Spirit, who we’ve been working closely with, for offering the friendly match and I’m looking forward to further games against other clubs over the next month.”
The development squad is a key part of Sydney FC’s Female Pathways with talented players from clubs across the NPL NSW Women’s Youth competition selected to train with the club in pre-season.
The fantastic support from local clubs and associations has allowed our Sky Blues coaching staff to keep a close eye on the potential next generation of Liberty A-League players.
Over time those who have shown they have the ability to step up will be selected to train with the Sky Blues women’s squad.
The squad will continue to train weekly until late February, with more friendly matches planned, before the players head back to their clubs for the new season starting in March.
