The Sydney FC Liberty A-League squad will return to Leichhardt Oval on Friday evening (7pm) to take on the Brisbane Roar in a show stopping round nine match-up.
The two powerful sides last went head-to-head during round two of the 2023/2024 season with Sydney FC holding over 55{3302a4a97df51ab71377f818b10857871066f471bffc8f5d55c900040a563c05} of ball possession and attempting over 10 shots at goal.
Despite their tremendous effort the Sky Blues went down fighting, losing 1-0 after a first-half goal by Chelsea Blissett.
Sydney FC are entering this week’s game following a goalless draw with Perth Glory on Sunday night in the west.
Whilst the sides drew 0-0, Head Coach Ante Juric was delighted by the effort displayed by the Sky Blues against their top spot contenders.
“That was the best game we have played this year in terms of energy, attacking, defending, all against a good team.
“We had maybe like 20 odd shots to their three so I am disappointed we didn’t get more out of the game,” he said.
The Brisbane Roar have not won a match in their last six games, marking their longest non-winning streak this season.
Sydney FC have won 43.3{3302a4a97df51ab71377f818b10857871066f471bffc8f5d55c900040a563c05} of Liberty A-League matches against the Roar.
The Sky Blues have been boosted with the likes of Cortnee Vine and Kirsty Fenton returning to their lineup but they are still waiting on Lucy Johnson to return from a foot injury.
This Friday’s battle will showcase a Matildas face-off as Sky Blue Cortnee Vine will go against her national squad team-mate and Brisbane Roar midfielder, Tameka Yallop.
Vine has had an incredible domestic and international football career with three Liberty A-League Premierships and one Championship, plus a World Cup semi-final on her resume. Her energetic attacking skills and versatility amongst the roster has made her one of the best players in the game.
The fiery forward has made her return to the bench recently after an ongoing hamstring injury and may return to the starting line-up on Friday.
Tameka Yallop is no stranger to grueling match-ups after making five Liberty A-League grand final appearances and taking part in 146 matches.
Yallop also has over 120 Australian caps and 13 international goals under her belt.
Friday night’s round two re-match is fast approaching and is sure to be a blockbuster clash between two of the league’s most promising squads.
