The Sky Blues are travelling to Suncorp Stadium this Friday to face off the Brisbane Roar in an epic Round Two showdown for the Isuzu-UTE A-League competition. The teams meet each other once again for a block-buster clash after a terrific Australia Cup campaign.
Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar last came together on October 7th for a showstopping Australia Cup final, demonstrating their potential as some of the leagues’ top contestants. After a thrilling battle, the Sky Blues came out on top, dominating the game 3-1. The efforts displayed by both sides in the Australia Cup Final is sure to set the bar high for this Friday’s head-to-head rivalry. After wrapping up the Australia Cup fixture, Sydney FC proudly raised the trophy, setting a positive momentum as they moved into the A-League campaign.
However the opening game for the Men’s competition last weekend sadly saw the Sky Blues go down 2-0 to Melbourne Victory. Coming off the back of the loss, the Sky Blues are determined to cement their recent dominance over the Roar; their last three appearances having resulted in two wins with this weekend potentially making a third.
Sydney FC’s roster is no exception to injuries with Jack Rodwell not expected to make his A-league return until Round 5 due to a hamstring injury. Joel King does not take the field this week due a niggly calf but is suspected to return in time to take on Melbourne City next week. Nathan Amanatidis is also recovering from a groin injury while Corey Hollman could be back after concussion.
Brisbane Roar kicked off their 2023/24 A-League season on the road after venturing to Campbelltown Stadium to face off Macarthur FC last Saturday evening. After a stellar Australia Cup campaign, Brisbane started their season with an away 1-1 draw against the South-West Sydneysiders. Despite a consistent start to the season, Brisbane Roar will be sweating on the fitness of midfielder Florin Bérenguer after he was replaced by Alex Parsons in the 85th minute.
While the starting formation is yet to be released, fans can still anticipate some key matchups for Friday’s showdown.
Two respected Player of the Year recipients will go head-on. Sydney FC attacking midfielder Anthony Caceres got two goals under his belt during the Australia Cup run alone. Caceres’ agility and football IQ is going to be a dangerous task for Brisbane Roar’s Irishman Jay O’Shea to manage. The distinguished midfielders will certainly keep the crowd on their toes when they step onto the field.
It’s a match which is sure to cause a stir with football lovers as tensions reach an all-time high. Who will come out on top in this Australia Cup final rematch?
