After falling to defeat against Nigeria on Thursday night, Cortnee Vine and the Matildas have thrashed Canada 4-0 in Melbourne to finish top of their group and progress to the Round of 16.
Goals to Hayley Raso, Mary Fowler and Steph Catley were enough for the Australians to secure their spot in the knockout stages of the World Cup, against Olympic Gold Medalists Canada, with their qualification hopes hanging by a thread following Thursday’s disappointing defeat to Nigeria.
Sydney FC’s Cortnee Vine has been involved in each of the three games so far this FIFA Women’s World Cup and she started last night’s match on the bench after playing 157 minutes in the opening two matches of the tournament.
The Sky Blues winger came on with 15 minutes to go with the co-hosts leading 3-0 and was dynamic moving forward and looked hungry to find the back of the net. She had 10 touches in the short spell she was on the pitch and won 50% of her ground duels.
Vine has become a favourite of Tony Gustavsson’s and she will be looking to continue her fine run of form with a match-up against England, Denmark or China in the Round of 16 awaiting the Matildas.
