In our ‘Where Are They Now’ series we’ll be taking a look back at some of our past players and hearing from them as they provide an update on what they’re up to these days.
This week, we heard from former Sydney FC youngster Alex Gersbach, as he hosted a special live Facebook chat on Tuesday night from Europe.
Gersbach joined the Sky Blues as a 17-year-old from the AIS in 2014 and was touted as one of the brightest prospects in Australian football following his signing.
The youngster made his Sky Blue debut in a FFA Cup Round of 32 tie away against Melbourne City, before making his Hyundai A-League debut off the bench in October in Round 1 at Allianz Stadium.
A full starting debut would follow a week later in a hotly contested #SydneyDerby that saw the Sky Blues come from two goals down to win 3-2.
Gersbach would play 21 times in total in first season as a professional, turning in a number of impressive performances as Sydney FC reached the 2015 Grand Final, eventually finishing as runners up.
The Sutherland junior started the 2015/16 season in similar vein, proving an assured presence in defence before transfer interest sparked in January.
Eventually, the youngster departed the Sky Blues at the end of January for Norwegian powerhouse Rosenborg BK, playing 58 times across domestic and continental competitions.
Gersbach claimed three league titles and three cups with the Norwegian side before joining Dutch side NAC Breda and most recently Danish side AGF Aarhus where he currently plies his trade.

“We’re into the fifth week of lockdown in Denmark. It’s not as strict as what’s going on in Australia, we’ve been training in small groups. This week we’re training individually, we’ve got a gym program and running program so everyone’s doing their stuff at home.
“I still talk to Aaron Calver, Rhyan Grant and we catch up when I come home, it’s a bit difficult now with Aaron in Melbourne.
“Last time I was home we all went up to the Hunter Vallery with Hagi Gligor as well. With social media these days we keep in touch anyway, you talk to each other through that.”
